Volleyball Positions: Every Role on the Court, Explained
The six standard positions, how they fit in rotation, and which stats coaches use to evaluate each role.
Volleyball teams field 6 players in 6 numbered positions at the start of each rally. The standard positions are setter, outside hitter (OH), middle blocker (MB), opposite hitter (OPP), libero, and defensive specialist (DS). Each position has a distinct offensive and defensive role, and each is evaluated using a different set of primary statistics.
The 6 Volleyball Positions
Setter
The setter is the playmaker of a volleyball team — every offensive sequence runs through the setter. Their primary job is to deliver accurate second-ball sets to attackers. In a 5-1 system, one setter is on the court for all 6 rotations. In a 6-2, two setters alternate so a setter is always in the back row.
Primary stats for setters: Assists (A), assist-to-error ratio, setting errors, and assists per set.
Outside Hitter
The outside hitter (OH) — also called left-side hitter or pin hitter — is typically the team's highest-volume attacker. Outside hitters rotate through serve receive and are responsible for attacking from the left antenna in most offensive systems. They carry the most serve-receive responsibility of any front-row position in a 5-1 system.
Primary stats for outside hitters: Kills (K), errors (E), hitting percentage, digs (D), and serve-receive errors.
Middle Blocker
The middle blocker (MB) plays at the center of the net and specializes in quick attacks and blocking. Middles run quick-tempo offenses — slides, 1-balls, and back sets — that force the opposing block to make split-second decisions. They are also the anchor of the defensive blocking system, responsible for closing the block on every outside attack.
Primary stats for middle blockers: Block solos (BS), block assists (BA), kills, hitting percentage, and blocks per set.
Opposite Hitter
The opposite hitter (OPP) — also called right-side hitter — plays opposite the setter in the rotation. Opposites attack primarily from the right side and serve as the team's primary back-row attacker in many systems. They are also responsible for blocking the opponent's outside hitter, often the most dangerous attacker on the other team.
Primary stats for opposite hitters: Kills, hitting percentage, blocks, and back-row attack efficiency.
Libero
The libero is a defensive specialist who wears a contrasting jersey and operates under special substitution rules — they can enter and exit freely for any back-row player without counting against the team's substitution limit. The libero cannot attack above the net or serve in most formats. They anchor the defensive system and are typically the best passer on the team.
Primary stats for liberos: Digs (D), reception errors, passing rating (0–3 scale), and dig percentage.
Defensive Specialist
The defensive specialist (DS) is a back-row substitution player who comes in to serve or play defense in place of a front-row player who rotates to the back. Unlike the libero, the DS uses a standard substitution and counts against the team's sub limit. Defensive specialists are typically strong passers and servers used in specific rotational matchups.
Primary stats for defensive specialists: Digs, serve-receive errors, aces (SA), and serve errors (SE).
Volleyball Position Numbers
In volleyball, each position on the court is assigned a number based on where the player stands at the moment of serve. Position 1 is the right-back server position. The numbering moves counterclockwise: Position 2 is right-front, Position 3 is center-front, Position 4 is left-front, Position 5 is left-back, and Position 6 is center-back. These numbers are used in rotation tracking, lineup management tools like Rotate123, and statistical analysis to identify where each player is when a specific play occurs.
What Stats Matter Most by Position
Tracking every stat for every player provides the most complete picture, but coaches analyzing position-specific performance should weight these categories:
| Position | Primary Stats | Secondary Stats |
|---|---|---|
| Setter | Assists, Assist-to-Error Ratio | Setting errors, Ball-handling errors |
| Outside Hitter | Kills, Hitting %, Digs | Serve-receive errors, Aces |
| Middle Blocker | Blocks (BS + BA), Hitting % | Quick attack efficiency, Block errors |
| Opposite Hitter | Kills, Hitting %, Blocks | Back-row attack kills |
| Libero | Digs, Passing Rating | Reception errors |
| Defensive Specialist | Digs, Serve errors | Aces |
SoloStats tracks all of these automatically during match entry — no manual stat attribution needed per position.
