□ What’s a Kill in Volleyball (and Why Efficiency Matters More)
Every coach tracks kills — but if you’re not tracking hitting efficiency, you’re missing the stat that actually wins matches.
- A kill is any attack that directly earns a point.
- Efficiency, not total kills, predicts success.
- Hitting Efficiency = (Kills − Errors) ÷ Attempts
- SoloStats automatically tracks kills, errors, and efficiency in real time.
In volleyball, kills get the glory. They're the highlight plays, the stat everyone looks at first, and the easiest to celebrate. But great coaches know that kills only tell half the story.
The other half — and the one that predicts winning — is hitting efficiency. This article explains what counts as a kill, how to calculate efficiency, and how to use these numbers to coach smarter.
1️⃣ What Counts as a Kill (and What Doesn’t)
A kill is an attack that directly results in a point for your team. It doesn’t matter how — if your attack ends the rally in your favor, it’s a kill.
Not every strong swing or blocked ball counts, though. Here’s a simple reference:
| Play Example | Kill? | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Attacker spikes, ball lands untouched | ✅ Yes | Direct point from attack |
| Opponent blocks the hit out of bounds | ✅ Yes | Point awarded to attacking team |
| Opponent digs and continues rally | ❌ No | Rally continues; no point yet |
| Attacker hits into the net or out | ❌ No | Recorded as an error |

2️⃣ The Formula Behind Hitting Efficiency
Hitting efficiency tells you how effective your attackers are when you factor in risk. It’s the stat that balances kills with errors — showing which hitters truly help you score points over time.
(Kills − Errors) ÷ Attempts = Hitting Efficiency
Example: 10 kills − 3 errors ÷ 25 attempts = .280
Interpretation: Anything around .200–.250 is solid at the high school level, while .300+ is elite in college play.
| Level | Target Efficiency |
|---|---|
| JV / Club | .150 – .200 |
| Varsity | .200 – .250 |
| College / Elite | .275+ |
□ How Coaches Should Use Efficiency Data
- Step 1: Track kills, errors, and attempts every match.
- Step 2: Calculate efficiency per player and rotation.
- Step 3: Adjust your lineups or set distribution based on consistency, not just total kills.
✅ Coach’s Quick Checklist
- ☑ Track hitting efficiency, not just kills.
- ☑ Review efficiency by rotation after each match.
- ☑ Identify high-risk hitters who cause more errors than points.
