Blocking Volleyball Drills: 7 Drills for High School Coaches (volleyball drills for blocking)

Blocking is both a technical skill and a tactical system. These drills help players move efficiently, close seams with teammates, and take away high-value attack lanes.

Use the drills below to train one-on-one mechanics first, then pair and team blocking decisions under live hitter pressure.

Why Blocking Matters

A disciplined block simplifies defense. When blockers seal seams and press effectively, your backcourt can sit in better angles and defend with confidence.

The Drills

1. Blocking Footwork to Net Penetration

Players needed: 4-8

Setup: Net, antenna markers, and one coach tossing near the tape.

How it works: Players perform shuffle or crossover footwork to a location and jump to press over the net. Focus on fast hands after footwork arrival.

Coaching cue: Arrive balanced before jump so hands penetrate forward.

2. Mirror Block Movement

Players needed: 6-10

Setup: Pairs at net on opposite sides, one leader and one mirror.

How it works: Leader moves laterally and simulates attacker approach points. Mirror blocker tracks and closes to each point before jumping.

Coaching cue: Stay square to the net while moving laterally.

3. Hand Angle Control

Players needed: 4-8

Setup: Coach on box with balls; blockers line up at middle.

How it works: Coach tips or hits into blocker hands. Blocker must angle hands to keep deflections in court rather than out of bounds.

Coaching cue: Firm hand and spread fingers to keep blocks in play.

4. Close the Seam

Players needed: 6-12

Setup: Two blockers on one side, attacker on opposite pin.

How it works: Middle reads setter toss and joins pin blocker. Pair is scored on seam closure timing and hand overlap.

Coaching cue: Outside sets the line; middle closes the seam quickly.

5. Block and Cover Transition

Players needed: 8-12

Setup: Two blockers with three defenders behind them.

How it works: After each block touch or miss, blockers must transition off the net and prepare to attack then reset for next rep. Defense covers tips and rebounds.

Coaching cue: Transition steps should be automatic after every landing.

6. Read the Setter Drill

Players needed: 10-14

Setup: Setter with three hitter options and front-row blockers.

How it works: Setter distributes to different hitters; blockers must read shoulders and release timing. Score correct first move and final closure.

Coaching cue: Read setter body positioning before chasing the ball flight.

7. Score Through the Block 6v6

Players needed: 12

Setup: 6v6 with bonus scoring for stuff blocks and controlled touches.

How it works: Rallies are normal, but teams earn a bonus point for direct block points or touches that lead to immediate transition kill.

Coaching cue: Reward team block outcomes, not solo highlight plays.

How to Build a Practice Around These Drills

Blocking work is most effective when it moves from movement mechanics into team reading and scoring.

  • 5 min - Blocking Footwork to Net Penetration
  • 10 min - Close the Seam
  • 10 min - Read the Setter Drill
  • 5 min - Score Through the Block 6v6

Early reps should feel technical and precise. Finish with team decisions so block timing transfers into match rhythm.
